Further research into McQueen's S/S 2012 Collections i came across the McQueen website online collection, inspired by the runway Collection but for the direct consumer. this collection was not as elaborate but i was inspired by some of the details on these pieces.
The First design that inspired, pictured above, here it is shown modelled with a white background to focus the viewer attention on the piece and to allow them to take in the design, which is a longer at the back than at the front, made up of black lace floral details with black applique pattern details placed over the silhouette and a feminine collar/Neckline that falls onto the shoulder.
The piece conjures a feeling of exquisite elegance and femininity and yet is edgy in its fabric colour palette and textural design, which i feel is what the designer was trying to reflect in the piece. these combinations of textural and design details on the fabric that create a feminine yet edgy silhouette and design are what inspire me about this piece.
the materials used consitsof floral laces, silks, chiffon's, creating a piece constructed in different areas of these materials with the floral lace making up the main body of the dress. the design requires skills in pattern cutting, darts etc to create the fitted silhouette and knowledge of how to combine the materials together in the most polished an well produced ways.this design may also have used CAD in the design stages to help with applique placement and design and then toiling stages using machine and hand sewing to create the finished piece.
the colour palette is restricted to black and uniform throughout the design with only the skin visible in areas of the garment visible to add another tone complimenting the strong black. similarly the design is uniform in silhouette, texture and pattern throughout with mirrored applique pattern to the front of the piece.
the lace and other light fabrics forming the only textural details.
this piece interests me as it is feminine yet edgy, but also takes the idea of pattern and makes it a design detailing, mixing it with feminine fabrics to give an elegant silhouette that is similarly elegant when the garment moves ion the figure, again this idea of combining light fabrics and pattern on the fabric to capture the detailing of a theme is something i wish to experiment with for my current project and in the future.
this piece shows that beautiful and intricate design can be available to the immediate consumer whilst reflecting the initial catwalk collection, which i feel is important as the consumer is desiring more quality from the high street as we move forward in the fashion world.
